Convention Center
City of Austin, Texas
Austin, TX
Michael Jones was Design Principal and part of the design team for this 325,000 sq. ft. convention center, located in downtown Austin, Texas. Part of the City's revitalization effort, the center was planned to respond to an extremely demanding urban context in which neighborhood "fit" was of paramount importance. The team worked extensively with the City’s planners and a variety of neighborhood groups to satisfy issues of building scale, image, orientation, acoustics and sound generation, traffic and parking considerations and landscaping. More than 30 community information sessions were conducted before finalization of the master plan.
The building contains approximately 125,000SF of exhibit space, a 30,000SF ballroom, meeting rooms and restaurant with dining veranda. Texas limestone and other indigenous materials are used throughout.
