Foundry United Methodist Church
Washington, DC
Originally located in Georgetown and later at 14th and G, Foundry dedicated its first building in September 1815. The current church building, located on 16th and P Streets NW, about 1 mile north of the White House, was constructed ca. 1900.
Its long history includes a wealth of distinguished attendees: President Rutherford Hayes, President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President William Clinton to name a few.
Powe Jones Architects was engaged to
evaluate the existing building, prioritize needed repairs, replacement and
enhancement projects and then establish a design-to budget that conformed to
the church's available funding capacity. The phased renovation and
restoration project addressed such diverse issues as roof repairs, fire
protection, creeping damp in walls, stained glass restoration, life-safety
systems, HVAC modernization, interior signage and the addition of a new ADA accessible access
ramp in the public right-of-way on 16th Street.
