Rail Control Center
New York City Mass Transit Authority
New York, New York

Michael Jones was Design Principal for this 130,000 sq. ft. secure facility that provides essential support and control functions for New York’s MTA system.

The center contains offices, training facilities, conference rooms, support facilities and the control center that oversees all of the rail lines that are a part of the MTA's New York City system.  The control center, a 220' long triple height volume on raised-floor throughout, is expressed by the building's vaulted metal-clad roof-form.  The entrance and office component is enclosed in a four-story limestone block that relates in scale and massing to the adjacent Police station.  The building's solid base and carefully located glazing provides enhanced security.  The structural grid is expressed through the masonry wall to reduce the building's apparent scale.

Located on a Midtown site, its scale and character were carefully refined to conform to this urban context and meet the rigorous expectations of the adjacent Clinton neighborhood property owners.
