The Pentagon
Arlington, VA
Located beneath the north mall of the Pentagon, the LSE was designed to provide additional space for a variety of functions and to enhance security within the existing building. The 2-story below-grade facility was designed to contain a number of light industrial uses (printing plant, warehousing, receiving, staging areas), as well as the Tri-Services Clinic and approximately 300,000 sq. ft. of office space. The roof was designed to accommodate landscape on structure, as well as to provide a parade ground for formal celebratory occasions. Exposed exterior walls are clad with ashlar stone so as to feel a part of the adjacent WPA-era George Washington Parkway overpasses and retaining walls. The glazed and skylighted atrium provides a point of orientation for the building and connects to a tunnel leading beneath Jefferson Davis Highway to the remote Pentagon parking lot.
